What are Advance Fees Scams?

Well the two go hand in hand, as they may say. I remember when I was a newbie to the world of Email. I thought it was the next best thing to ESP. Instant communication with people all over the world at the tip of my typing fingers: fabulous, to say the least.

Friends whom I had not seen or heard of in years were now contacting me and I in return was able to locate long lost acquaintances. Yet, for some reason, I didn't grasp just how wonderful the medium was until Mr David Smith Barrister Esq. contacted me to inform me that I was the beneficiary to the estate of the late Jorge Krugger to the tune of 30 million and one hundred thousand dollars (USDs) ! Oh, was my heart pounding and I could hardly contain myself ( I did take a breather to go and relieve myself before an accident occurred ). All I had to do was contact :d.smith080@googlemail.com david.smith1esq@yahoo.co.uk ; he and his associates (Barrister Aidan Walsh.Esq Markus Wolfgang, Mr. John,Marvey,Esq, Mr. Jerry Smith Esq) awaited my prompt response.

Well need I say that when they said "Let your fingers do the walking" Mine sure did! Hey for 30 million, no brainer ! All the guy at this prestigious " Law firm" wanted was my name, address, telephone number, occupation and sex; naturally, this information was required to make sure that I was the right person. You just don't hand out 30 mil like that, it has to be to the right person.

I thought it was a bit suspicious that the Email was sent to "undisclosed-recipients"; was I really the one? Naturally, my friend in Nigeria assured me that it was just a security measure that they take to make sure that they have the right person and yes! It was me the new multi-millionaire! The real beneficiary of Mr Krugger"s fortune! Well I had to relieve myself again before I continued my conversation with my new found friend in Nigeria!.

Now there was one "small" problem; David (we were on a first name basis by now) had to inform me that there were a few costs involved before he could release my funds; but not to worry a few hundred bucks sent by Western Union to him will enable the smooth transaction of my millions from "their" to my bank account (hey I told him which account to use).

No problem. David said" However, don't let your partner know about our transactions until you decide that you want to share your riches .

He was so thoughtful that he decided that my file should be handled by his associates in the UK and that he would transfer my file to them. Scammers will send out a spammed email usually advising the recipient that they have won an outrageous amount of money from some foreign lottery. I am sure we have all at one time or another received one of these ridiculous emails.

I remember years ago when I received my first "winnings notification", boy was I excited, 10 million bucks! Well the excitement was short lived. When I saw that the email was sent to "undisclosed-recipients ". That seemed odd to say the least, how come they are congratulating me yet they don't even know my name ? Of course they wanted me to to provide my address, name, occupation and sex ? I never won more than 200 bucks in a legit lottery and they couldn't care less if I was a male or female, or if I had a job or was unemployed.

Well there was no doubt in my mind that it was some type of scam, but how could they be trying to scam me by offering me money ? That is when I decided to do a little investigating to satisfy my curiosity. With just a few minutes of googling, I was introduced into the amazing world of the 419 Nigerian scam industry. Our friends at Scam Watch offered a very detailed explanation of how these scams work and is well worth a read. It seems that one will be asked to send the bottom feeders some advanced fees to cover the paperwork required before they can send along your "winnings". Ya know legal fees, insurance and the likes. Some poor souls have sent along thousands of dollars before finally realizing that the check is not in the mail and it never will be.

If you would like to see a list of examples of these types of scams and others take a hop along to Lotto Scams There is a good collection and it is updated regularly.

Scammery

There are a few simple rules one can follow and save themselves from becoming victims of scam artists. This is not rocket science and as many scam artists say "requires no previous computer experience or skills". Just read these simple guidelines and you will save yourself, hundreds and even thousands of your hard earned currency.
Rule number one: "If it sounds too good to be true, well it is!" Not it probable is! Ghee, I won a lottery worth millions with my email address! Didn't even have to purchase a ticket, a true God sent. Out of the millions of email addresses, they chose mine. Imagine the thought of receiving 20 million USD's and all I have to do is spend a few hundred bucks to cover the legal fees.

First question, I thought that when you win something it is a happy event, why do I have to pay to claim my prize? I won 50 bucks once on a scratch and win ticket and they didn't ask for anything when I cashed in my winnings. Too good to be true, yes sir.

How about the millions I have inherited from a long lost relative (just so happens that he was worth millions) If I would have known, I would have at least mowed his lawn and painted his house while he was alive; had I known. This one was a real deal, only had to sent a few hundred bucks to get the paper work done. My new found friend in Nigeria was going to take care of the transaction; he did ask for 10% but hey if he had not contacted me I would never have known.

Just the other day my bank sent me an email saying that my account was frozen, some scum bag was trying to access my account. Well of course, I sent all my personal info back to them. One has to protect all those millions that came from lottery winnings and inheritances. I think that I am up to almost a billion now, not sure, I will have to check my email today.

Thank the big guy for the internet, now all my long lost relatives can reach me just by googling my name and my email address wins millions.
